No More Loo Roll!

It's a shopping list staple and the root of many an argument in house shares, but the humble loo roll also finds itself the subject of doctors' warnings.

Toilet paper may be the sort of stalwart household item you've literally never given a second thought to, but maybe you should...

Not only could our Andrex habit - other brands are available - could be doing us more harm than good but it's actually a really ineffective way of cleaning ourselves.

Wiping with toilet roll alone could actually just spread faeces around instead of moving it, and excessive use could even lead to health issues such as anal fissures and urinary tract infections.

Rose George, author of The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters, told us:

The humble loo roll has come under fire

"I find it rather baffling that millions of people are walking around with dirty anuses while thinking they are clean.

"Toilet paper moves s***, but it doesn't remove it."

While we all feel suitable icky, it's important to note that in countries such as South Korea, Japan, Egypt, Greece and Italy, bidets are commonplace.

Bidets score a few points over toilet paper.

Not only are they believed to be more environmentally friendly than loo roll, but water also does a much more thorough job of cleaning our derrieres.
